Reducing our own environmental footprint

Over the past year we managed to reduce our overall carbon footprint to 1.742 tonnes per fte. Our travel kilometers generate the greater part of our CO₂ emissions. This is the reason we compensate for air travel related CO₂ emissions via the Climate Neutral Group. We stimulate sustainable behaviour via the use of public transport. In our offices the use of ‘green energy’ has increased substantially and several have moved to more sustainable and energy efficient locations or reduced their office space. We request our suppliers to comply with our standards and encourage our staff to handle energy and raw materials responsibly.

Reducing the carbon footprint of our clients

Our most effective way to accelerate sustainability still is CO₂ reduction in our projects by our advanced and innovative energy concepts. The Deerns Multiplier shows our achievements in comparison to our own environmental impact. In 2019 the CO₂ savings in our most sustainable projects over the entire lifespan amounted to 1.742 times our own annual CO₂ emissions caused by our own business operations. Since 2010, Deerns has published the Deerns Multiplier showing the amount of CO₂ emissions that we are saving with our sustainable projects compared with the amount of CO₂ emissions that our operations produce. This number indicates the relevance of our designs for society in general and for our clients in particular. 

Minimalise the use of materials 

Next to energy savings and the reduction of CO₂ emissions also use of materials has a substantial impact on the environmental care within the built environment. In our role as a professional consulting firm we take responsibility to stress the relevance of sensible material usage in construction projects and developed the Materials Multiplier to demonstrate the material usage savings.
